UK's Competition Commission concludes that the market for retail store cards is uncompetitive

Office of Fair Trading to investigate supermarkets web trading

  • The Competition Commission says that consumers are overpaying to the extent of £100m each year:
    • the average annual percentage interest rates (APRs) on store cards is about 30% - much higher than credit cards;
    • There are about 14 million store card accounts in the UK;
    • it is considering forcing providers to put health warnings about rates on store card statements; and
    • the trade body covering all the major store card providers, said that store card APRs had become more competitive recently.
